Advertising and stuff..
Okay, so we have been talking about advertising and stuff and I just do not get it. I mean, I do get it; I am not stupid. I just do not see the problem. I understand that people are concerned with the images that are exposed on a daily basis to all of us. They do use photoshop and other methods to make the models look better and sometimes unrealistic. I get that, but I do not get why people cannot just take responsibility for themselves. So like a week or something ago, our professor asked why clothing advertisements do not have warning labels for anorexia if cigarette companies have warnings on their products and advertisements for lung cancer. Well, cigarette companies are actually selling products that have harmful effects to your health. Chloe and Dolce and Gabbana are selling clothes, not eating disorders. You have to responsible for your body and how you take care of yourself. You cannot be lazy and expect everyone else to do it for you. When I look at these ads, I only see clothes. I really do not care about the models they use. If you cannot look at an ad without wanting to go throw up your lunch, then you should go see a therapist. Individuals need to learn how to take care of him or herself. Each one of us need to realize our own goals and limitations and who we want to become. Advertisements do not need to be censored. We need to make ourselves stronger and be able to protect ourselves. If we do not and put all that responsibility on the companies, then there will be entire future generations of people who do not know how to protect themselves against bad influences or simply mean people. So if you have not gathered this already, I believe that it is the individual's responsibility to protect and take care of themselves, not the government's, not the companies'. And do not be stupid, by protect I mean striving to learn what is right and wrong, healthy and unhealthy, and asking for help when you do not know. I do not mean giving yourself CPR and stuff like that. So do not be an ass and say stupid things like that.

I completely agree. Advertising is free speech and people definitely need to take responsibility for themselves and stop blaming advertising for them hurling up their lunch. You can't say that advertisers make commercials and print-ads to make girls feel fat or unstylish or whatever. They're just trying to sell their product. In fact, many modeling agencies won't accept models if they look too thin. They understand there is a problem with body image and they don't want the thinnest people; they want the healthiest.
ReplyDeletePeople need to stop blaming advertising and use some common sense.
Clothing companies and others such like them are trying to sell a product. They try their best to convince the consumer that this product must be bought. I would have to disagree that all they are trying to do is sell a product. In my opinion they do more than just try and sell a product but rather with ill intentions target the consumer's psyche. The end goal of the company is to sell the product, this is clear. In order to sell the product, the company must attack the consumer. Make the consumer feel self conscious and make them feel that they are missing something. They want the ad to make the consumer feel as bad as possible making their mind start to think about their insecurities. They do this because a dissatisfied consumer is more profitable than a satisfied consumer. Advertising does have an affect on people. In their means to sell the product, the end goal of their actions, they are allowed trample the consumer's consciousnesses which may or may not lead to an adverse effect. The effect of the advertisement may lead the person to buy the product but also could lead to other effects that are much more malicious.
