What is a teacher? A source of inspiration, a role model, a man or woman who gave up their lives to teach the youth of society- that’s a teacher. What’s a student? A young sponge, readily available to absorb the information given to them by their parents and more importantly their teachers- that’s a student. What happens when you mix a teacher and a student? You get an environment where the minds of tomorrow are molded and shaped, future doctors and presidents sit at a table, listening to their teacher tell them that if they put their minds to it, they can be anything they want to be.
Not anymore.
The minds of tomorrow are shown that they are no longer useful and that they will amount to nothing. My friends, I’m talking about teachers cheating for students. Yes, you heard correct. A teacher, the source of knowledge, encourages children to lie and cheat in order for what? Oh now here’s the shocker—money. Yes, my friends, I’m talking about those green cotton fibers in your wallets. Our minds of tomorrow are dying because of those green fibers. And who are the teachers cheating for? Why the school, of course. These teachers take children’s standardized tests and open that large brown envelope. You can hear that distinct rip of the envelope in every classroom across this beautiful nation. The tests are then taken out and you can hear the scratch…scratch….scratch…of the erasers going back and forth across those small graphite bubbles on a scantron. Then, with that sharp number two pencil, the teachers go forth and change their students’ answers. Hours upon hours of thought and energy, now just a faint imprint on a scantron. My friends, those answers represented hopes and dreams. True intellect was erased by a teacher wanting more money. These dreams were all deferred, as the old poem goes. These kids are the new raisins in the sun. A glass ceiling has been built over their heads by the same people who were supposed to help them break through it.
My friends, in an age where the beautiful nation of America has fallen behind to educational superpowers like China and India, can children be allowed to crust and sugar over? NO! We must free ourselves from this oppressed state that the teachers have forced upon the youth of society, we must push forward to stop this hindering of education for monetary pleasure, we must rise up against the rut society has forced upon the youth and take the new road that has not been taken for quite some time now. A teacher is supposed to show us that there is no easy way out by cheating! That road is not the path that we should take! There is no nice grassy route that leads us achievement, only by honesty and showing a students’ true potential shall our society grow and flourish.
Those number two pencils, held so calmly in the teachers long thin hands, bubbling away new responses- a,b,a,a,d,c,d,d...These letters are the new bars that lock away the potential of our youth. We shall no longer allow teachers to encourage children to stand on their grave of dreams but mold them in order to claim the sky for themselves. So we need to open our mouths to sing.
My friends, we have the potential of the immortals in our folklore and tales, yet we are stopped by teachers. My friends, education is the golden egg in our society. We need to embrace it, live with it, drink it and eat it. For without education, we are nothing. And that, my friends, is something money can’t buy.
